The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is searching over 60 locations across Tamil Nadu and Kerala, looking for suspected sympathizers of terror group IS who were reportedly radicalized through videos.
The Anti-terror agency is also conducting raids at multiple places in Karnataka.The National Investigation Agency (NIA) Wednesday conducted
searches at close to 40 to 60 locations across Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka in connection with the Coimbatore and Mangaluru cylinder blast cases. In Tamil Nadu, the searches are underway in Chennai, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli, Mayiladuthurai, and Thoothukudi.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, carried out searches at 40 locations across Tamil Nadu,including 16 areas in Coimbatore, in connection with the October 2022 car cylinder blast.
A source privy to the development said the searches were conducted in connection with the NIA’s ongoing investigation into the blast in front of the sangameshwarar temple at Kottaimedu that took place in Coimbatore on 23 October 2022.
Multiple teams of the NIA, accompanied by the police, searched houses at Ukkadam and Kuniyamuthur areas in Coimbatore on Wednesday morning.
The agency has arrested 11 persons in the car blast case. The raids were carried out based on information extracted from the accused during custodial interrogations.
A five members NIA conduted cheks in Tiruchi at the house of Sheikh Dawood in New Raja Colony near Bheema Nagar. Shaik Dawood is said to be an IT professional.
In Mayiladuthurai district, three NIA sleuths conducted searches at the residence of Mohammed Faisal, 32, said to be working as a driver abroad, at Chinnamekatheru in Vadakarai village near Tharangambadi.
NIA team also simultaneously searched the houses of suspected sympathizers of banned Islamic outfits in Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Thoothukudi districts.
The searches were conducted at the houses of various individuals: Anwaruddin in Karikkathoppu near Tirunelveli town, Kamaludeen in Ervadi near Valliyoor in Tirunelveli district, Ayesha in Achchanpudur in Tenkasi district and Harish Khan in Kaayalpattinam near Tiruchendur in Thoothukudi district.
While a four-member NIA team entered the house of Anwardeen, a seller of construction materials, around 5 a.m. with armed local police personnel guarding them, another team, led by Inspector Ranjit, searched the house of Kamaluddin on Mohinuddin Mosque Middle Street in Ervadi at the same time.
A day before Deepavali, the residents of Kottaimedu in Coimbatore city woke up to a car explosion that occurred in front of Sangameswarar Temple at dawn on October 23, 2022. By evening, the victim of the car explosion that was triggered by one of the two LPG cylinders kept inside the vehicle was identified as Jameedsha Mubin.
While the suspected mastermind Mubeen, 29, was killed in the blast, the police initially arrested six persons – Muhammad Azharudheen, 23, Afsar Khan, 28, Muhammad Talha, 25, Muhammad Riyas, 27, Feroz Ismail, 27, and Muhammad Nawaz Ismail, 25, all hailing from Coimbatore, on various charges.
According to the NIA, the accused had conspired for several months before executing the terror attack. The investigators found out that Farouk led the conspiracy meetings in Hasanur and Kadambur areas of Sathyamangalam forests in Erode in February 2022, which was attended by Mubin, Azharuddin, Hidayatullah and Ali.
