programme has been exposed to the world Amidst strained ties over an alleged Chinese spy balloon, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on February 18 met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi and raised “the unacceptable” violation of American sovereignty and warned that Beijing’s material support to Moscow over Ukrainian war would attract sanctions.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has warned China against providing “lethal support” for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and condemned the violation of United States airspace by an alleged Chinese spying balloon as he held rare talks with Beijing’s top diplomat, Wang Yi.
The meeting on Saturday between the two top American and Chinese diplomats took place on the margins of the Munich Security Conference.
The meeting of the two senior officials happened late on Saturday on the sidelines of a global security conference in Munich, Germany, just hours after Wang scolded Washington as “hysterical” in a running dispute over the US’s downing of the suspected Chinese spy balloon.
The Secretary directly spoke to the unacceptable violation of U.S. sovereignty and international law by the PRC high-altitude surveillance balloon in U.S. territorial airspace, underscoring that this irresponsible act must never occur again,” State Department Spokesperson Ned Price said.
Mr. Blinken also raised the Russia-Ukraine war during the meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
During the meeting, Mr. Blinken made clear the United States will not stand for any violation of our sovereignty, and that the Chinese high altitude surveillance balloon programmer which has intruded into the airspace of more than 40 countries across five continents has been exposed to the world,” he said.
Relations between the two countries have been fraught since Washington said China flew a spy balloon over the country before US fighter jets shot it down on President Joe Biden’s orders. The dispute also came at a time when the West is closely watching Beijing’s response to the Ukraine war.
On Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine, the Secretary warned about the implications and consequences if China provides material support to Russia or assistance with systemic sanctions evasion,” Mr. Price said.
Mr. Blinken condemned the ICBM test by North Korea as the latest destabilizing act carried out by Pyongyang, and emphasized the need for responsible powers to respond to such significant international challenges.
During the meeting, Mr. Blinken reaffirmed there had been no change to the longstanding ‘One China’ policy of the U.S., and he underscored the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, the spokesperson said.
The Secretary reiterated President Biden’s statements that the United States will compete and will unapologetic-ally stand up for our values and interests, but that we do not want conflict with the PRC [People’s Republic of China] and are not looking for a new Cold War,” Mr. Price said. Mr. Blinken underscored the importance of maintaining diplomatic dialogue and open lines of communication at all times, he said.
There are various kinds of lethal assistance that they are at least contemplating providing, to include weapons,” Blinken said, soon release more details.
The incident had an immediate impact on what had been seen as an opportunity for the US and China to stabilize relations. In early February, Blinken postponed an expected visit to Beijing, after the balloon floating over the US in plain sight dominated media headlines and public attention.
The visit would have been the first to China by a US secretary of state since 2018, on the heels of a relatively amicable face-to-face between US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping at the Group of 20 summit in November.
Blinken raised a possible conversation between Biden and Xi, according to the State Department official, who said US officials have not heard anything in recent days that would change the US assessment that the balloon was for Chinese surveillance.
We haven’t heard anything that provides any kind of a credible explanation for what this balloon was. The US stands firmly behind our assessment,” the official said.
